The Luberon's perched villages were built for defence, not tourism. Between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, communities climbed above the valley floor to escape bandits, plague, and passing armies. Stone houses clung to limestone outcrops; narrow calades—steep cobbled lanes—wound upward to fortified churches.
What survives today is not reconstruction but adaptation: the same golden walls, the same vaulted passageways, now framing galleries, cafés, and Wednesday-morning markets instead of grain stores and smithies.
The regional natural park, established in 1977, protects 185,000 hectares of garrigue, vineyards, and ochre quarries across the Vaucluse. Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes, and Bonnieux anchor the western massif; Lourmarin and Cucuron anchor the southern flank. Each village retains its medieval footprint—no car park within the ramparts, no chain commerce on the place de l'église. Roussillon's ochre cliffs, worked from Roman times until 1930, still stain the village façades in seventeen shades of sienna and burnt orange. Gordes rises in tiered spirals from the Calavon valley, its Renaissance château commanding sight lines to Mont Ventoux.
Market day remains the social engine. Apt's Saturday market, one of Provence's largest, fills eleven streets with tapenade, goat cheese, lavender honey, and Cavaillon melons. Smaller weekly markets in Coustellet, Lourmarin, and Gordes serve the villages themselves: locals shopping before eight, visitors arriving after nine. The rhythm has not changed in three centuries. What has changed is access. Until the 1960s, most Luberon villages were depopulating, their farms abandoned to scrub. Peter Mayle's 1989 memoir reversed the arc; today the challenge is preserving village life against second-home pressure and coach-tour volume.
